Installation Pro-Tips & Maintenance
1. Choose the Right Fasteners
Since this hinge is 2″ wide and designed for heavy-duty use, we recommend using 3/8″ carriage bolts or heavy-duty lag screws.( NOT included)
-
For Wood Doors: Use carriage bolts that go all the way through the door with a large washer on the back.
-
For Metal/Steel Frames: Use Grade 5 or higher hex bolts to prevent shearing under heavy loads.
2. Spacing for Weight Distribution
For standard cargo or dog box doors:
-
2 Hinges: Sufficient for doors up to 3 feet tall.
-
3 Hinges: Recommended for doors over 4 feet tall to prevent the middle of the door from bowing and to maintain a weather-tight seal.

FAQ
- How much weight can a 8-inch strap hinge hold?
While weight capacity depends on the mounting surface and fasteners used, a pair of these 8″ heavy-duty hinges is typically rated for doors weighing up to 100–150 lbs. For heavier ramp doors or wide cargo doors, we recommend using three or more hinges to distribute the load and prevent door warping.
-
What is the difference between a strap hinge and a butt hinge?
Strap hinge features a long “arm” (the strap) that reaches across the surface of the door. This provides significantly more leverage and support than a standard butt hinge, which is hidden in the door jamb. Strap hinges are the preferred choice for heavy cargo doors because they distribute weight across a larger surface area, preventing the door from sagging over time. -
Can this hinge be used on both left and right-hand doors?
Yes, this strap hinge is universal and can be mounted on either side.180 / 270 degree rotation on corner mounting. -
Is the mounting hardware included?
Mounting bolts are sold separately to ensure you get the right length for your specific door thickness.
